Junta Extend Ceasefire In Myanmar To May 31 – State Media
According to the state media, Myanmar will extend a temporary ceasefire until May 31st.
BANGKOK, May 7 – Myanmar’s junta has extended a temporary ceasefire to May 31 to support reconstruction efforts following a massive earthquake in late March that killed at least 3,700 people and devastated parts of the country, state media reported on Wednesday.
The junta initially announced a ceasefire in early April, days after the March 28 earthquake, to support relief efforts, following similar moves by anti-junta armed groups.
Military airstrikes and artillery attacks have continued in some parts of Myanmar despite the ceasefire announcement.
The earthquake also rattled neighboring Thailand, where at least 86 people were killed while 14 others remain missing.
Following the quake, the military junta—which seized power in a 2021 coup—declared a ceasefire on April 2. That truce was later extended.
Myanmar is experiencing a prolonged ethnic conflict, mostly in northern parts, where ethnic armed groups have been clashing with the ruling military junta in recent months. The violence has displaced thousands and raised concerns about the conflict spilling over into Thailand.
Notably, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing is expected to travel to Russia, on his second such trip this year, to attend the annual Victory Day Parade in Moscow. – Reuters
