GEORGE TOWN Jan 29PKR Bukit Bendera division chairman, Dato’ Jason Ong Khan Lee, has firmly thrown his support behind Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s position, advocating for the abolition of pension schemes for state assemblymen and Members of Parliament (MPs).

Dato’ Jason Ong, who is also the former state assemblyman (ADUN) for Kebun Bunga, pointed out the parallel functions of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Singapore’s Central Provident Fund (CPF).

“Elected representatives in Singapore only have the CPF, which functions as their pension scheme. I do not see why it cannot be done in Malaysia too,” he said.

He also highlighted that most countries in the region, except for the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan, do not have a specific pension scheme or benefits for their politicians based on their years of service in the government.

“Countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia do not have such pension schemes for their MPs.

“In countries like the UK, US, and Europe, elected representatives do benefit from pension schemes. However, a distinctive feature of their systems is the utilisation of separate pension funds dedicated to providing retirement benefits for politicians so that the country will not be burdened by a growing number of pension receivers.

“Datuk Seri Anwar made a bold move. This is the sort of leader our country needs. Although the ‘no pension’ proposal might be an unpopular decision, everyone acknowledges that it is the only way to move forward from the financial challenges we are facing,” he said.
